PELORUS: BROADBAND SERVICES AND EQUIPMENT STRATEGIES FOR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES
Raritan, NJ – Over the next critical 24 months, college campus broadband budgets will swell from $2.5B to $3.4B. Although that represents a substantial leap in only two years, no single vendor or service provider has a lock on this trove. Indeed, the university broadband market is up for grabs, and what will ultimately determine the winners depends on which players best interpret the needs of campus CIO’s, and then implement targeted campaigns that address those needs.
According to a report from The PELORUS Group and Waxberg Consulting entitled “Broadband Opportunities In Higher Education Markets,” competition for this market will intensify. Al Fross, President of The PELORUS Group, warns “The higher education market may easily be defined as a microcosm of the commercial marketplace with CIOs deploying network technology, services, and applications in support of their institution’s missions and goals. In order to be successful selling to these CIO’s, broadband vendors must be cognizant of the challenges keeping CIO’s up at night. Appreciating what these motivations are is the difference between approaching the market, and winning it.”
Based on interviews with college campus CIO’s across the U.S, the study found that the governing criteria used by CIO’s in selecting broadband service providers, in order of importance, are:
The most important criteria used in CIO broadband equipment vendor selection are:
Moreover,
from the perspective of interviewed CIO’s, the industry doesn’t
perceive a single strong leader. CIO’s describe an industry leader as
a company with a strategic vision for higher education networks and that
offers innovative solutions to the their challenges.
Fross adds, “There is a void in true industry leadership that
is begging for a vendor to fill -- a vendor with both vision and
innovative solutions.” In addition to detailed survey results, the report assesses campus demand for a myriad of broadband equipment and services, including optical networking, Ethernet, networked PDAs, DSL, ISDN, cable modems, VPNs, VoIP, Voice over Frame Relay, Voice over ATM, Grid Computing, and much more.
