Raritan, NJ - According to a new report from The PELORUS Group, the softswitch market is set to enjoy a quantum leap in deployment.  The market for softswitches, a relatively recent phenomenon in telephony years, is still in its infancy.  A majority of installations, as of the beginning of 2001, were for field tests.  Thus there remains some uncertainty as to which vendors’ products - and strategies - will ultimately prove successful.  The report, entitled “Softswitches And Broadband Switching:  The New Environment”, helps de-mystify the nascent industry, and projects that it will leap from a revenue base of $200 million in 2000, to almost $4 billion by 2004.  That reflects growth rates, year to year, of over 100 percent!

The softswitch market is currently driven in great measure by the needs of carriers in a highly competitive arena.  Softswitches promote the worldwide adoption of best-in-breed, next generation communications.  They are essentially large and sophisticated software programs that run on commercial servers instead of the proprietary platforms that characterize conventional narrowband circuit switches.  They herald the arrival of new multimedia service offerings, and they do so quickly and inexpensively.  They also enable the convergence of voice networks, such as the PSTN, with packet networks such as those implemented with ATM and IP protocols.

The report suggests that the telecommunications market is changing, and vendors of softswitch solutions stand to reap the benefits of those substantial changes.  With data communications and the Internet evolving at dizzying speeds toward broadband interactive applications, traditional narrowband voice-oriented switches are giving way to an entirely new array of products - products which will be offered by traditional large telco switch manufacturers such as Alcatel, Ericsson, Lucent, Nortel Networks and Siemens, more focused competitors such as Sonus Networks and Telecom technologies, vendors of computer equipment, and a bevy of well-funded startups.  This report takes an unbiased view of the market into the new millennium, and helps qualify and quantify where the market is heading, who is doing the driving, and just how long it will take to get there it our website at www.pelorus-group.com
