PELORUS
Group Report Says
SMS Poised For Growth
Raritan,
NJ - The potential for short message service (SMS) may be one of the
best-kept secrets in the mobile telephony world. With a history of spectacular successes in Europe, SMS could
soon emerge as a critical means of communication for mobile phone users in the
United States as well. According to
a new report from The PELORUS Group entitled “The Future of SMS”, the
prospects for SMS are bright. Although
less known here in North America, short message service is now widely used in
Europe and Asia. The worldwide
total of SMS messages sent per month had reached over 16 billion at the end of
2000. This represents phenomenal
growth within only a short period. And
that growth soon may well be echoed in the western hemisphere.
Mark
Thompson, Senior Consultant with The PELORUS Group, notes, “Until recently,
most digital mobile phone users had SMS -- without even knowing it.
Everyone uses SMS when they read the words “voice mail” or see a
symbol on their mobile phone screen indicating that they have a waiting voice
message. Voice mail notification by
some accounts comprises about 75 percent of current SMS volume. But SMS can also be used for personal communications.
In its basic, one-way version, messages can be sent to mobile handsets
from PCs. And since carriers in
North America are now implementing two-way SMS, this means that mobile users can
reply and SMS can be sent between handsets.
The implications are obvious, and the potential for growth, exciting!”
Thompson
adds, “The PELORUS Group is bullish on SMS prospects.
We expect SMS revenue to leap over seven-fold by 2005, from under $200
million for 2001.
This exclusive report closely examines competition from other mobile
messaging offerings such as WAP-based email, paging services, instant messaging,
and short-range radio.
SMS emerges time and again the winner, especially as the service evolves
into Enhanced Messaging Services and Multimedia Messaging Services.”
